The Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal intends to launch a Handicrafts Emporium at Thamel, a popular tourist destination in Kathmandu, in August this year.

The Association is presently carrying out discussions with the Industry Secretary regarding the setting up of Handicrafts Emporium as well as a handicrafts laboratory.

The Handicrafts Emporium is expected to serve as a commercial centre for those dealing in Nepali handicraft items. Products from niche markets would also be displayed at the Emporium. It would showcase handicraft items of micro, small and medium enterprises. The products on display would be changed after every three months.

Thamel is a key tourist spot and hence setting up an Emporium there will facilitate sellers to easily develop direct contacts with overseas customers. The Emporium would have nine unique stalls and the entrepreneurs could book a space at a rate of NPR 7,000 per stall per month.

In addition to setting up the emporium and laboratory, the Association also intends to tie up with the Federation of Nepalese Cottage and Small Industries.

The export statistics released by the Trade and Export Promotion Centre for the initial 10 months of current fiscal indicate a 12 percent fall in export of Nepali handicraft items. Exports dropped to NPR 375.783 million as against exports worth Rs. 427.177 million achieved during the corresponding period last year.
