Sharp decline in Uzbek cotton yarn output

Uzbek's cotton yarn production has registered a sharp decline of 30.6 percent to 68,085 tons for the first six months of the current year, compared to the corresponding period of 2010, according to the figures released by the Uzbek State Statistics Committee.

The country's cotton fabric production also fell by 21.8 percent to 35,132 square meters during the first half of 2011.

Similarly, the production of cotton fibre dropped to 589,804 tons during the January-June period, a fall of 7.6 percent compared to the same period last year. In 2010, Uzbekistan's cotton fibre output went up to 1.125 million tons, which was an increase of 7.5 percent over the 2009 figures.

With an annual production of 3.5 million tons of raw cotton, Uzbekistan produces about 1-1.2 million tons of cotton fibre every year. In terms of cotton fibre production, the country is ranked sixth globally, while it is the third largest exporter of cotton fibre.
