According to Twelfth Five-Year plan for the hemp industry, sales ratio of hemp textiles between domestic market and export market will reach 1:1 by the end of the plan period.

During the twelfth five-year plan, it is expected that the consumption of hemp textile fiber will increase 8 percent per year and is anticipated to reach 1.25 million tons (including other hemp fibers) by 2015 and 2 million tons by 2020.

China imported 142,200 tons of raw flax in 2010, representing an increase of 33.68 percent year on year. Import value registered US $235 million, an increase of 50.36 percent, according to Customs statistics.

Meanwhile, exports of flax yarn reached 23,200 tons, a growth of 61.25 percent; exports of linen fetched 161 million meters, up 34.99 percent; exports of hemp apparel (containing more than 30 percent flax) were about 1.643 billion pieces, an increase of 9.67 percent year on year; export price marked US $5.82 / piece, up 2.87 percent year on year.

Considering the ambitious targets laid out in the five-year plan, analysts' view it as arduous task. They say, domestic flax market is still immature as consumers hold low awareness towards linen products, which is one of the factors constraining the development of domestic linen industry.
