Bt cotton is being cultivated on 98.5 lakh ha of land, constituting nearly 90 percent of the total area of 111.42 lakh ha of land under cotton cultivation, according to the department of Agriculture and Cooperation.

This is a dramatic change from the years when the existence of substantial genetically modified cotton acreage in the country was denied. The figures issued by a Central Government department amounts to the Union Government acknowledging that Bt cotton is now widely grown in India.

The figures also reveal the State-wise estimated area under cotton cultivation and the expected production during 2010-11 cotton season. As per the data, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are the top cotton producing States, followed by Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
