Two private companies roped in for harvesting cotton

Ghana has sought help from two private companies in its effort to increase the country's annual cotton production to 21,000 tons during the 2011 season that begins in October or November. This would be at least four times more than the 5,000 tons of cotton produced by Ghana last season, as per the figures of US Department of Agriculture.

The Government's effort is in line with the announcement made on March 7 by Vice President John Mahama to increase the country's cotton production.

The local units of two private companies, the London-based Armajaro Holdings Ltd. and Singapore-based Olam International Ltd. have been roped in by the Government to harvest cotton this year, who will be working along with agricultural company Wienco Ghana Ltd.

The two private companies are asked to take over harvesting of cotton from the state-owned Ghana Cotton Co, which operates three gins with a capacity to process 55,000 tons of cotton.

Cotton is grown in the three northern regions of the country that border Burkina Faso, which is the largest cotton producing country in Africa.
