High import duty imposed on blankets

In a move aimed at safeguarding the domestic industry against low-cost imports, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has imposed a 40 percent import duty on some items including blankets and footwear.

Finance Minister Tendai Biti said that people will still be permitted to duty-free import products worth US$ 300 per month, but blankets, footwear and some electronic products have been excluded from the list.

The decision has put cross-border traders dealing in these items in a dilemma. Previously, these items were included in the rebate list for travellers and a person was permitted to duty-free import these goods once in a calendar month.

As a result, several informal sector players were reaping undue benefits from sale of footwear and blankets, particularly during winter season, ZIMRA said.

ZIMRA has, however, clarified that those travellers willing to bring in these items into the country would keep on benefiting from the reduced rates of duty which were made effective from January 1 this year.
