Puebla Textile City, which lies 136 km from Mexico City, is under-occupied even after 12 years of its establishment. At present, only 12 of the 55 factories within the industrial park are functional, amounting to mere 21.8 percent of the space meant for setting up textile units.
The situation can be attributed to the slump phase witnessed by the Mexican textile sector during the last decade.
However, there are now trends indicating the revival in the country's textile sector and the number of people directly employed in the textile park has risen to 1,500.
SGS (Seambles Global Solutions) is planning to set up a new outerwear manufacturing facility in the industrial park after the end of the current monsoon season. The new facility will come up in an area of 12,000 sq. m. and will generate employment opportunities for 300-350 people. It will be mainly an export-oriented unit destined to European and the US markets.
There are also plans afloat to set up 13 other manufacturing facilities including a new polyester spinning plant.
