In the last few years, the group began an apparel retailing chain, set up a textile integrated park and also an educational initiative. The Group is also now foraying in to production of polyester films, an idea originally conceived in 2004.

Deepak is married to Nitika and has two sons – Arya who is four years old and Anant, born a month ago. He is full of praise for Nikita. He considers her to be very understanding, very supportive and also motivates him a lot. “If I have to give priority to business over family, she is very supportive and understanding and also prods me to excel in whatever I do”, he says with pride.

Deepak when away from office and at home just loves to relax and play with his children. He reads books on spirituality and philosophy, which seems obvious from the quotes he throws around in our more than an hour-long chat.

His favourite author is Robin Sharma, a management guru who has written the best selling 'The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari', which coincidentally is also one of Deepak's favourites. His choice of spiritual and philosophical books is from Osho Rajneesh.

Deepak feels that he led a sheltered life, while he did his schooling and graduation in Ahmedabad. However, the move to the US changed everything. He was on his own and had to take decisions – good or bad, based on his own judgments. He considers the years in the US to be a game-changer in his life, as he learnt to take independent decisions which is helping him till date.

Deepak prefers to call himself as a person with simplistic needs. Though he carries a blackberry, however, he does not have computer on his desk and would prefer to call or message a person directly, rather than send or respond to an e-mail.

He credits the first generation including his father and uncles for being foresighted and not carrying any baggage from the past. He explains, “They are very open-minded and do not have a fixed mindset about doing things. They listen to the second generation and take in to consideration the current circumstances before arriving at any decisions”.

The biggest quality that he admires and would like to imbibe from the first generation is having patience, managing people and working hard. He says, “When you are young, you are impatient. However as time passes, you realize that, losing patience does not make sense and one also ends up losing focus.

“Secondly, I have seen the first generation slog and it has inspired me to work harder and give my best. In short, I have started believing that there is no substitute for hard work. I also aspire to learn the art of multi-tasking. I have seen the elder generation handling various tasks with ease and also executing each of them perfectly. One more last but most important, is they are good at managing people”.

Deepak is strict about keeping his personal and professional life apart. He informs, “I do not believe in making life a business. Business is to earn a livelihood and not to turn it in to a lifestyle”. Business talk is strictly avoided by Deepak at the dinner table, but as and when he is in the corporate office at lunch time, the family members invariably end up discussing business, with each of them catching up on what the other is doing.
