An initiative has been launched in Varanasi to provide handloom weavers and handicraft artisans with their own websites.
The project has been initiated by some NGOs in collaboration with the National Internet Exchange of India and the New Delhi-based Digital Empowerment Foundation. The textile and handloom department of the Uttar Pradesh government is also participating in the project.
The initiative is likely to benefit sari makers, carpet weavers and other craftsmen belonging to the districts of eastern UP. It will offer thousands of weavers and artisans a better exposure in the global market, while obliterating the necessity to depend on middlemen in metro cities for their business.
