Seeking better wages and observance of fair labour practices, around 10,000 textile workers have decided to launch an agitation during next month to get their demands met.
The workers are also protesting against some of the employers who do not permit them to avail medical facilities when they fall ill. Besides, they are also seeking other incentives like travelling allowances, etc.
In adherence with a decision arrived at during a meeting at Bosco Skills Centre on July 31, 2011, the Swaziland Manufacturing and Allied Workers Union (SMAWU) is organizing the protest march. The Union was authorized by the members to lead the protest and ensure that law was followed.
SMAWU stated that the protest is scheduled to be held during the month of October this year and the arrangements for the same are in final stages.
The Union stated that the Minister of Labour and Social Security has been updated regarding the same and the exact dates for the protest would be shortly announced.
