To make Thai silk meet international organic silk norms, The Queen Sirikit Department of Sericulture has inked a deal with the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Bioagrico-op.

Bioagrico-op, a non-profit organization and the Chamber would assist the Sericulture Department to draft the norms that the Thai silk would need to fulfil the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) under the self control and third party certification.

The move is intended at enhancing the Thai industry's capacity, particularly with regards to SME operators and value addition for goods.

The five-year deal would help the Thai agency locate local products with geographical indication for global markets.

Pursuant to the tie up, technological assistance and new suggestions would also be provided to upgrade the system of Thai silkworm production, and enhance quality of Thai mulberry and silk so that they can fulfil organic standards.
