Despite unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the United States, a significant portion of Iranian hand-woven carpets have the US market as their final export destination, Feysal Mardasi, Head of Iran's National Carpet Centre has said.

Mr. Mardasi said that during the initial five months of the current Iranian year which began on March 21, the country shipped hand-woven carpets worth US$ 182 million to around 56 countries across the globe.

He said that in spite of the limitations and sanctions imposed on the Iranian trade and economy by the US, around 25 percent of the overall production of Persian rugs in Iran during last year was aimed to the US markets.

Iran is the world's biggest exporter of hand-woven carpets. Its Persian rugs are renowned for their intricate design and skilful making.

Carpet-weaving represents Persian art and culture, and relates back to ancient Persia.

Each year, Iran manufactures around five million square metres of carpets, 80 percent of which are sold in overseas markets.
