Societe Cotonniere du Gourma, commonly called Socoma, is expecting good cotton harvest of at least 36,000 tons this season.
Socoma is the second largest cotton company in Burkina Faso. This year, it has increased the area under cotton cultivation by 12 percent to 55,800 hectares. The cotton sown area is higher than the target of 50,000 hectares set at the start of 2011-12 cotton planting season in June.
Burkina Faso is the biggest cotton producing country in the eastern part of Africa. Many cotton producing companies in the country have cut their projections for harvest this season due to delayed sowing of cotton and a strike by farmers asking for a rise in price of cotton.
Lack of rain and increase in insects during the cotton sowing season led to a delay in planting of seeds.
Societe Burkinabe des Fibres Textiles, the biggest buyer of cotton in Burkina Faso, is among the companies that have reduced their cotton harvest projections this season.
