Cotton arrival low in Punjab

Arrival of new cotton is low in Punjab, one of the chief cotton producing States in the country. About 14,500-15,000 bales (1 bale = 170 kg) of cotton has arrived in the State's mandis till September 26 this season, as against the arrival of approximately 21,500-22,000 bales during the same period last season, which is a shortfall of around 30 percent year-on-year.

This has led to an increase in price and the average price of medium staple cotton was between Rs. 3,400 and Rs. 4,350 per quintal, while that of long staple was between Rs. 2,800 and Rs. 4, 870 per quintal on Monday.

Currently, private entrepreneurs are the major buyers and Government agencies like Markfed and Cotton Corporation of India are yet to begin their annual procurement from the State's mandis. Hence, analysts expect the price of cotton to rise further with the increase in demand.

Although the area under cotton in Punjab has increased this year to 550,000 hectares compared to last year's 483,000 hectares, rains during end-August have affected the crop in some parts of the State.
