Haryana cotton ginners end month-long strike

Cotton ginners in the north Indian State of Haryana have ended their month-long strike after an assurance to consider their demands was given by the Chief Minister.

Around 140 striking cotton ginners were demanding a reduction in market fee and rural development fund charged by the State government from the present 4 percent to 1 percent.

A charge of 1.60 percent and 2 percent are levied by the neighbouring Rajasthan and Punjab States towards market fee and rural development fund. Hence, the ginners are asking the government to reduce the levy to make it on par with these States.

In addition, the cotton ginners are also asking the government to rationalize value added tax (VAT) on cotton by ensuring timely refund of excess tax on inter-State sale.

For about a month, farmers in Haryana were either selling their cotton produce in Punjab or storing it due to the strike by the ginners.

With the end of the strike, cotton growers in the State will now be able to sell their produce at their nearest markets.
