Maharashtra, one of the major cotton growing States in India, may soon unveil a new textile policy, especially aimed at welfare of farmers in the cotton-growing Vidarba region of the State.
The new comprehensive textile policy, once implemented, would result in creation of 1.2 million employment opportunities at a cost of Rs. 400 billion.
The policy would encourage setting up of cooperative and private spinning mills, cotton processing units and apparel manufacturing units in the cotton-growing regions of the State. It would give a boost to textile sector in Marathwada, north Maharashtra, and the Vidarba belts in the State, which are all cotton-growing areas.
The Maharashtra government would also introduce special incentives by waiving off interest on loans to cotton cultivators.
