Tajikistan has harvested 390,000 tons of cotton during the first nine months of 2011, which is a record in the quantity of cotton harvested by the country during the last 20 years.
The total cotton production this year in Tajikistan is expected to be even more due to favourable weather conditions and some cotton still in the fields which remains to be harvested, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon stated.
The interest in production of cotton increased in Tajikistan this year owing to the high demand for the product last year with prices rising to US$ 5,000 per ton in global markets.
Cotton accounts for 15 percent of total exports from Tajikistan.
