'Our topline will be the bottomline by 2015' – Akash, Narayan group

Plans are on the anvil to double the fabric dyeing capacity by setting up a new plant in an adjoining plot to the existing mill of the company. Akash is of the opinion that their core strength lies in dyed synthetic women's fabrics and would prefer to stick and grow in their area of competence.

He joined the operations of the company in 2006. Within months of joining, he noticed the need to have a proper way of reporting. He says, “The reports for production or sales were generated the following day, while in today's competitive times it is important to have real time information.

“So I took the onus of setting up an ERP platform for which I had to do a lot of study and research of our company and also meant burning the midnight oil many a times, while developing the customized software with the vendors. I joined the course at SP Jain after implementing the software. The in-depth knowledge gained from this exercise in the first two-years made the course easier to follow”.

He gives due credit to his father – his mentor for giving him a free hand in implementing new ideas, which provided a boost to his entrepreneur spirit. He cites implementing the ERP platform as one example of the free hand given by his father, within just a few months of his joining the business.

He also credits the senior level managers in his company who were very cooperative and supportive in implementing new ideas.

Currently Akash handles the sales division, HR and the supply management side and has recently started looking after the purchasing activities of the company. His main contribution to the marketing activities has been reducing the lead times and avoiding a stock out situation, which has mainly been made possible to the ERP systems implemented earlier.

“I make sure that my buyers keep their customers happy, but this can happen only if I supply on time as well as keep an observant eye on the status of the goods at the buyers end. After all, if the goods I have sent become a dead stock at the buyers end, I cannot expect a repeat order”, he explains.

He continues, “I sincerely believe that our growth can come only if I keep our buyers happy. We have built our company around the motto of delivering service and ensuring customer delight.”

Akash is also closely involved in the recruitment process of the organisation. The only trait he looks for in an individual is self-motivation. He does not believe that self motivation programs help in this area. “Self motivation is in-built”, says Akash.

“Our current topline will be our bottomline in the next three years”, he says boldly and with conviction when quizzed about their future plans. On the ways and means to translate it in to reality, he explains. “This can be achieved by timely deliveries, innovation in product varieties, customer satisfaction and offcourse expansion of capacities”.

In the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the family is involved in various charitable hospitals and schools and donates handsomely to these institutions. Akash however has a dream to build shelters for the homeless, who are exposed to the vagaries of nature and plans to turn the dream in to reality, once the company reaches a certain scale and size.
