Floods affect Japanese textile firms in Thailand

Massive flooding in Thailand has affected operations of several Japanese companies, including textile-related firms.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has put the figure for number of companies affected by floods at 447, that is, about 20 percent of all Japanese companies in Thailand. The Ministry has set up a task force to deal with the situation.

Tokyo-based Toray Industries Inc. has announced that its eight plants spread over five companies have been affected due to heavy flooding in Thailand. It has stopped operations at a plant that makes polyester yarn and nylon thread.

The company has announced a contribution of 10 million yen towards relief operations and has also set up task forces both in Thailand as well as its Tokyo headquarters.

Teijin Ltd., another Japanese textile manufacturer, has also stopped production at its polyester yarn plant in Thailand.
