A rise has been noted in exports of woolen carpets, pashmina and garments from Nepal during the Nepalese fiscal year 2010-11 which ended on July 15, 2011.
During the review year, the exports of woolen carpets increased by 15.6 percent year-on-year to NPR 4.92 billion, according to the annual report released by Trade and Export Promotion Center (TEPC).
While exports of readymade garments rose by 8.7 percent y-o-y to NPR 4.08 billion, those of pashmina surged by 24.2 percent to NPR 1.64 billion, and polyester yarn grew by 18.5 percent to NPR 5.55 billion during the last fiscal year.
Nepal imported readymade garments worth NPR 6.37 billion during the one-year period.
Overall, there was a marginal rise in exports from Nepal, but the country still suffered a trade deficit of NPR 333 billion, which is NPR 18 billion more compared to fiscal 2009-10. While exports grew by 5.9 percent to NPR 64.56 billion, imports jumped by 5.8 percent to NPR 397.54 billion during the review period.
Nepal's trade deficit with India, its largest trading partner, was NPR 216 billion, while with China it was NPR 45 billion during July 16, 2010 to July 15, 2011. Other major trade partners of Nepal during the fiscal year were the US, Australia, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Netherlands and the UK.
