There is a significant rebound in international para-aramid fibre market with both production and price increasing after recovery from 2008 economic crisis.
Para-aramid fibres are heat resistant and strong synthetic fibres used in making flame-resistant and heat protective clothing, body armour, hot air filtration fabrics, sail cloth and sporting goods.
Currently, over 90 percent of global para-aramid production capacity is shared by Teijin in Japan and DuPont in the United States.
Korea-based Kolon is a new entrant in the field and last year the company increased its para-aramid production capacity to 5,000 tons per annum. The growth in both the volume of trade and price this year reflects that there is a sufficient demand from downstream industries to absorb the additional capacity.
Another new entrant is Taihe, a China-based leading high-end fibre manufacturing company. The firm has entered into production of para-aramid fibre after it began producing spandex and meta-amide fibres. Still, China is almost entirely dependent on imports for its current demand of about 5,000 tons per annum.
Global operation rate of para-aramid plants is around 85 percent this year and gross margin is more than 40 percent. This shows that there is a growing demand and international business climate is very good for para-aramid enterprises.
