Philippines' Sagada Weaving obtains patent for its designs

Sagada Weaving, a leading weaving firm in the Sagada town in Philippines, is now a Patent Holder of Designs.

The patent certificates have been granted to Sagada for its local designs by the Bureau of Trade Marks of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and the Bureau of Patents.

The product design of the weaving firm consisting of two half and one full diamond forming an X sign in a mix of two random colours has been granted patent under IPO Certificate of Registration.

Sagada Weaving already enjoys exclusive patent right for production, use, sales and import of an industrial design formed from a combination of six colours, with a diamond and X sign.

Granting of these patent certificates has provided the weaving firm exclusive rights in respect of the said designs. Upon granting of these patents, other weavers no longer have the right to use these designs or may have to face sanctions for using these designs, as prescribed under the Intellectual Property Law.

The firm updated the local DTI office that the patent enforcement would be done gradually so as to allow time to other producers' to clear out the products that resemble the patented designs of Sagada Weaving.

Meanwhile, other producers have been urged to discontinue production of woven items with designs and combinations of Sagada Weaving.

The firm said it encourages other producers to get their creations, innovations and inscriptions patented, calling them as products of “intelligent minds and attitude”.
