Textile manufacturing sector, the second largest employer in the west Indian State of Gujarat, is slowly losing its ground in the State, according to a report.
The report, based on a research conducted by Knight Frank India, provides details about five Indian States – Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu – that are said to possess high manufacturing potential.
The study says nearly 200,000 people are employed in Gujarat's textile industry, which forms 18 percent of overall workforce in the State's manufacturing sector. It, however, adds that the share of textiles in the State's total industrial production has declined to 6 percent at present from 12 percent a decade ago.
Similarly, the number of textile production units in the State have declined by 22 percent in the last ten years. In comparison, the number of textile manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu has grown more than 1.5 times during the last decade.
Using Knight Frank Output Specialization Matrix, the research says textile falls under the 'Lost Opportunity' quadrant in Gujarat, and explains that the State is gradually losing its specialization in the textile sector compared to other States in the country.
In fact, Tirupur and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu are fast displacing Ahmedabad and Surat in Gujarat as the leading textile centres of India.
