Cotton growers in the west Indian State of Maharashtra can look forward to get some financial support from the government.
Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of the State, said the government has already decided to provide financial assistance per hectare of land to cotton farmers. The announcement regarding the quantum of relief would be made after the elections to local bodies get over, he added.
He stated that the code of conduct during elections prevents him from making the announcement about the relief now itself.
He further said that his government has requested the Central Government to provide bonus to farmers, in addition to the already announced minimum support price (MSP) for procurement of cotton.
He informed that the issue of bonus would be decided by the Agriculture Price Commission, which falls under the Union Ministry of Agriculture.
