“The interior Maharashtra, which does not have access to port, seems to have lost the advantage. When similar incentives are available in western Maharashtra, why would any one come and invest in interior Nagpur, instead of investing in Mumbai-Thane or Pune-Nasik belt,” he explains.
Commenting on other incentives provided in the textile policy, he says, “The government has given zero percent interest subsidies for the cooperative sector, but there are hardly any cooperative units working successfully in Vidarbha. Hence, the policy will push the economy of western Maharashtra where the cooperatives are doing well.”
“Secondly, the capital subsidy will be beneficial to the big players, and not the farmers or the small players like the powerloom owners or weavers. It is because getting a loan is a bigger problem for small players. So, this policy will not have a major impact on Vidarbha, until and unless some big player genuinely decides to come to Vidarbha because of the cotton availability,” he concludes.
