An agreement has been reached between the management and workers of India Jute Mill, which had been shut since March 21, 2011, paving the way for reopening of the mill located in Serampore, Hooghly district of West Bengal.

West Bengal Labour Minister said the mill management has agreed to pay an advance of Rs. 3,000 to the workers immediately. The advance amount would be later on deducted from the salaries of workers on installment basis.

At the tripartite meeting, attended by State government officials, it was decided that the mill management will clear all pending dues, in accordance with a pact agreed in 2010.

The meeting also decided to set up a monitoring committee tasked with keeping an eye on all aspects of production at the mill. The committee would have representatives from the management, workers and lawyers.

The mill employed over 5,000 workers before it closed last year.
