The Croatian textile and leather footwear industry have combined lost over 130,000 jobs in the last 20 years.
The export share of the textile industry within the industrial sector was 14.6 percent in 1999, which has dipped to just 5.52 percent in the first 11 months of 2011.
The only way to resurrect these industries is to implement 'Formula 5000', said a dean of the Faculty of Textile Technology (TTI).
Darko Ujevic was presenting a paper on 'Formula 5000' – a plan paper to revitalize the fortunes of the Croatian textile sector.
He said the objective of the plan was creation of new and preserving existing jobs, as well as create competitiveness of Croatian textile products.
He assured full support of TTI to the textile and clothing industry to implement the plan and revitalize the sector.
The institute will provide professional and scientific support to small and medium sized textile factories, the dean added.
However, government support and right policies are also crucial for the success of the plan, he concluded by saying.
