BJMC bags bulk jute export orders from southeast Asia

Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has received export orders for 30,000 bales of raw jute and jute products from Thailand and 5,000 bales of raw jute from Vietnam, BJMC Chairman TD Mitra has said.

Bangladesh, till now exported jute and jute items to 40 countries, which includes new markets in Africa and Asia, and now Vietnam and Thailand are the two new additions to the list.

Bangladesh jute industry has been facing tough times due to the setback suffered in exports following turbulences in the Middle East and North Africa. Jute exports to Syria discontinued, while that to the Middle East and North African nations almost reduced to half.

However, new markets like Vietnam, Thailand and some other African nations has helped in easing the setback, and with a rise in export volumes, the country is likely to achieve its jute export target of 220,000 tons fixed for the current fiscal, Mr. Mitra said.

As per Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, with an 82 percent year-on-year rise in raw jute exports and 38 percent y-o-y jump in exports of jute items, Bangladesh's earnings from jute exports, for the first time, have crossed the US$ 1 billion-mark.

Bangladesh's jute exports during the first seven months of the current fiscal year that began on July 1, 2011, stood at 100,000 tons, the BJMC Chairman said.
