Makhdoon Shahabuddin, Pakistan's Minister for Textile Industry, has said that the Government considers cotton and textiles as the main sectors of the country's economy.
He revealed that he opposed the purchase of cotton by Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) as it was not in the interest of cultivators.
He informed that around 96 percent of cotton grown in the country had gone to the ginneries and cotton farmers had got the price for their produce according to global market rates.
The Minister dismissed the charge that All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) had established a cartel to keep cotton prices low.
He said the Government would announce a package for the farmers that would enable them to get seed and farm tools, fertilizers and high-speed diesel at discounted rates.
