Chinese yarn imports rise phenomenally in Feb & March

Despite signs of a slowdown in activity in the textile and apparel sector, Chinese yarn imports rose exponentially in February and March this year.

China's net imports of cotton yarn increased by 213.3 percent and 159.2 percent year on year, respectively, in the second and third month of 2012.

Increasing volume of yarn imports reflects that China still has certain demand for yarn. Yarn exports rose phenomenally mainly due to the larger spread between domestic cotton and foreign cotton.

This makes the price of domestic cotton yarn less competitive, forcing downstream producers to rely on imports of yarn.

In January to February this year, China's import volume of cotton yarn from Pakistan and India increased by 36 percent and 54 percent, respectively, year on year.

Of which, import volume of pure cotton yarn increased 48 percent and 52 percent, respectively, year on year.
