A textile surfactant manufacturing project has commenced operations in Taoyuan High-Tech Industrial Park, situated in northwestern Taiwan.

The unit would be operated by Taiwanese subsidiary of central Japan-based Nicca Chemical Co. Ltd., a leader in surfactants industry.

Inaugurating the operations at the new unit, Woody TJ Duh, Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs, said the strong supply chain and highly flexible operations of Taiwanese textile industry have weighed in favour of Nicca deciding to invest in Taiwan.

The Minister said the commencement of new project would further strengthen Taiwan’s textile supply chain and lead to greater economic exchanges between Japan and Taiwan.

The new plant has been set up at a cost of NT$ 800 million (US$ 26.7 million), and is expected to generate 30 employment opportunities. The textile surfactant unit is the second facility of Nicca in Taiwan, and it would help the firm position Taiwan as its base for Southeast Asian operations.

The Japanese firm has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI) for establishing a R&D centre.

Following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Japanese investment in Taiwan is on the rise as Japanese firms are setting up backup bases in other countries.
