Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered establishment of Perarignar Anna Handloom Silk Park in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, which is expected to benefit over 10,000 silk weavers of the southern Indian state.

Ms Jayalalithaa had already consented to provide a subsidy equal to nine percent of the total project cost to all the textile parks being set up in the state.

The said silk park involving a cost of Rs. 838.3 million would be set up on 75 acres of government land at Kilkathirpur in Kanchipuram district.

The nine percent subsidy of the Tamil Nadu government would be deducted from the cost of land, which is Rs. 137.7 million. The remaining Rs. 62.3 million would be provided as loan without guarantee, repayable in five years.

The park would also have other facilities like dyeing halls, lab, loom centres, designing centres, training centre, dispensary, exhibition hall, public amenities centre, materials godowns and retail sales division.

Alongside the silk park, the Chief Minister has also ordered establishment of weavers’ training centres in Kanchipuram and Kumbakonam, and has sanctioned Rs. 4.69 million for each of the two centres.

The Chief Minister said Tamil Nadu was a leading producer of bivoltine silk or white silk, and it also leads in cocoon rearing and mulberry cultivation.

She said the state government proposes to raise the grant for mulberry farmers from existing Rs. 4,125 per acre to Rs. 6.750 per acre in order to sustain production and encouraging farmers.
