Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda has appealed to farmers in the country’s cotton growing regions to enter into contract farming, as it is best suited to boost the production of cotton.

Addressing a news conference after a visit to the cotton growing regions of Mwanza and Geita, he said the Government has initiated contract farming programme so as to improve cotton production and thereby increase the income of the farmers.

He urged experts to find practical solutions to problems faced in contract farming in Mwanza region.

He appealed to legislators to start informing people about the Government initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity of cotton farmers.

He said experts and politicians should work together to find a permanent solution to the problems faced in contract farming.

The Mwanza region is a business hub for East African countries of Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya, and hence concerted efforts should be made to attract foreign investment in the region, the Prime Minister said.
