Odisha MP seeks handloom cluster at Sonepur

Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, a Member of Parliament (MP) from Balangir in eastern Indian state of Odisha, has urged the Central Government to establish a handloom cluster at Sonepur town, which also serves as the headquarters of Subarnapur district.

In a letter to Rita Menon, Secretary, Union Ministry of Textiles, seeking establishment of the handloom cluster, Mr. Singh Deo pointed out that Subarnapur is famous for its ethnic Sambalpuri sarees, but the weavers in the region suffer greatly due to unavailability of proper facilities.

The MP said that Balangir Parliamentary constituency, of which Sonepur is a part, is considered to be one of most backward regions of India, and establishment of the handloom cluster in Sonepur would not only provide a boost to local artisans, but would also benefit the economy of the region.

He said promoting textile and handloom industries, which have good potential for employment generation, could provide a boost to the local economy.

He mentioned that the state government is working for establishment of a skill development centre under public-private partnership (PPP) mode, to impart skill training to local below-poverty-line (BPL) youth in textile production.
