The domestic cotton production data released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) shows that the country has reaped less cotton by now this season, as compared to last year.

As per the statistics, ginners received around 10,768,861 bales of seed cotton (phutti) by December 15 this year, which is 2.42 percent or 267,157 bales less than the cotton arrived by same time last season.

Of the new arrival, textile mills have procured around 8,853,314 bales of cotton till December 15, while 171,946 bales have been exported, thus leaving an unsold stock of 1,743,601 bales with the ginneries, the report says.

State-wise, the report said seed cotton arrival in Punjab ginneries by December 15 this year reduced by 12.68 percent to 7,645,861 bales. In other words the ginneries received 1,110,364 bales less than last year.

Ginneries in the province of Sindh received 3,123,000 bales of seed cotton during the review period, which is 37 percent or 843,207 bales more than crop received by ginners by December 15, 2011.

While there are 784 ginneries in Punjab, Sindh houses 178 ginneries.
