China’s cotton yarn and fabric imports from India and Pakistan have risen sharply during the initial ten months of 2012, owing to quantitative restrictions imposed on imports of raw cotton.

While China’s cotton yarn and fabric imports from India grew by 80.5 percent year-on-year in January-October 2012 period, imports from Pakistan rose by 57.5 percent year-on-year.

During the ten-month period, China’s overall cotton yarn imports increased by 69.7 percent year-on-year to 1.761 million tons. In terms of value, cotton yarn imports registered a 44 percent y-o-y growth and were worth US$ 3.972 billion.

China’s total cotton fabric imports swell by 10.7 percent y-o-y to 6,960 million metres during the period under review. In terms of value, there was an increase of 1.2 percent y-o-y to touch US$ 1.458 billion.

China’s raw cotton imports skyrocketed 95.8 percent y-o-y to 4.3 million tons during the ten-month period, mainly due to huge price difference between domestically grown cotton and imported cotton.

However, quantitative restrictions imposed by the Government prevented further increase in imports of cotton, which led to a rapid increase in imports of low and medium-grade cotton yarn and fabric.
