China's cotton imports skyrocket in 2012

China’s cotton imports surged by 52.7 percent year-on-year to 5.137 million tons in 2012, the China Cotton Association said citing the data released by the General Administration of Customs.
 
In December 2012, China imported 532,000 tons of cotton, down 260,000 tons or 32.7 percent year-on-year. However, cotton imports during the month increased by a sharp 75.3 percent over 302,000 tons of cotton imported during November 2012.
 
According to the association, the average import price of cotton in December was US$ 1,947/ton, down US$ 155/ton or 7.4 percent compared to price of previous month. Cotton import price fell for the first time below US$ 2,000/ton since August 2010.
 
In the first four months of 2012-13 cotton marketing year, China’s cotton imports have declined by 18.1 percent year-on-year to 1.371 million tons.
