It is expected that Angola’s Africa Textil would be able to restart cotton spinning and weaving operations within a year, as the renovation, modernization and expansion work of the textile unit is going on well, Provincial Director for Industry, Geology and Mining, Augusta Pinto said in Benguela, macauhub reported.

Forming a part of the government programme to restart the textile mill, the project involving renovation and repairing of the old unit and setting up of a new unit on an area of 30,000 sq m. is in its third phase, he said.

The official said the first stage of the project, executed by a Japanese firm, focused on removing of obsolete machinery from the old factory and clearing the place to ease the construction work.

Upon completion of the job, the textile factory would restart with two working lines, of which one would have an annual production capacity of 350,000 bed covers and 100,000 towels.

Located in the Fronteira near Benguela, Africa Textil was first launched in 1974. However, the unit filed for bankruptcy in 2000, after its operations halted between 1998 and 1999.

In order to satisfy the demand of the country’s textile industry, Angolan government has invested in cotton production in Malanje and Kwanza Sul provinces and has established cotton processing and spinning units.
