Pakistan textile industry upbeat as power crisis ends

The end of the prolonged power crisis and the restoration of electricity and gas supply to textile industries in Punjab has given new hope of achieving the set target of US$ 14 billion in textile and garment exports from Pakistan during the current fiscal year that ends on June 30, 2013.

Mr. Shahzad Ali Khan, regional chairman-Punjab region of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), told fibre2fashion, “We are expecting to achieve the target of US$ 14 billion in textile exports by the end of June 2013, since we have started receiving uninterrupted supply of electricity and gas.”

Similarly, Mr. Mahesh Kumar, president of Pakistan’s Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), is also upbeat about the sector’s performance during the remaining few months of the fiscal year.

He says, “Though there was a decline in Pakistan’s cotton yarn exports to China basically due to power shortage, we have now started exporting cotton yarns to the country.”

“We are expecting a recovery in cotton yarn exports to China in the coming months,” he adds.

Meanwhile, according to the statistics released by the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee, Pakistan has missed the cotton production target during the current season by 1.3 million bales.
