China's textile exports to Asean nations surge in 2012

Textile and garment exports from China to Asean countries surged 34.2 percent year-on-year to reach US$ 26.66 billion in 2012.
 
In fact, Asean nations replaced the European Union as the main driver to boost overall growth of China’s textile and apparel exports.
 
During the year, exports to Asean accounted for 10.5 percent of total Chinese textile and clothing exports.
 
In 2012, China’s total textile and apparel trade was worth US$ 279.44 billion, registering an increase of 3.1 percent year-on-year. Of which, exports fetched US$ 254.98 billion, up 2.8 percent y-o-y, while imports scored US$ 24.46 billion, up 6.2 percent y-o-y, according to Chinese customs statistics.
 
Thus, China posted a trade surplus of US$ 230.52 billion, up 2.5 percent y-o-y, in its textile and apparel trade during the 12-month period.
 
Compared to 2002, China’s textile and garment trade volume, exports and imports rose by 27 percent, 12.5 percent and 35 percent respectively, in 2012.
 
From January to December 2012, China’s export volumes of yarn and fabric grew by 7.6 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively, and among them, exports of cotton yarn and cotton fabrics increased by 13.9 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively.
 
However, export prices of cotton yarn and cotton fabric declined by 15.1 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively, during the period.
