Textile smugglers in clutches of FOU

Textile materials worth N1.2 billion have been seized by Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Customs, announced Nigerian Customs Service (NSC).

The seizure was made during a raid at China Town, a popular market run by Chinese nationals in Lagos.

Smugglers were mainly foreigners who took shelter in this Town, said Alhaji Umar Daura, Comptroller of FOU.

Daura also added that smugglers would be punished for violating laws on import ban.

He informed that China Town raided towards the end of December would remain close till date all the illegal materials were identified and confiscated.

Last year, a raid party launched 1437 raids and seized materials worth N1.8 billion, Daura informed.

During these raids, 59 suspects were arrested, and there were six casualties, few were fatal in nature, while at least two officers died in action.

Daura stated that his unit recently seized 576 bales of textile materials valued at N17.3million found in a warehouse.
