China's textile & garment exports to Japan dip in Q1

China’s textile and apparel exports to Japan declined by 3.96 percent year-on-year in the first three months of the 2013, according to Chinese customs statistics.
 
The decline in the first quarter was majorly due to a sharp 10.5 percent year-on-year fall in China’s textile and clothing exports to Japan in March 2013. During the month, China’s exports of textiles and garments to Japan earned US$ 2.16 billion, of which textile exports fetched US$ 380 million, down 13.66 percent year-on-year, while apparel exports were dropped by 9.78 percent year-on-year to US$ 1.77 billion.
 
During January to March 2013, China’s textile and garment exports to Japan registered US$ 6.03 billion, a decline of 3.96 percent year-on-year. Of this, textile exports were worth US$ 1.06 billion, down 7.03 percent y-o-y, while apparel exports increased by 3.27 percent y-o-y to US$ 4.97 billion.
 
During the quarter, China's yarn exports to Japan were worth US$ 97.65 million, down 7 percent y-o-y. Volume-wise, China exported 17,996 tons of yarn, down 2.66 percent y-o-y. 
 
Among yarn exports to Japan, however, silk yarn exports increased by 13.56 percent y-o-y to 300 tons. The average price of silk yarn exports, too, increased by 12.7 percent y-o-y to US$ 50.37/kg. On the other hand, export volume of wool yarn and animal hair yarn declined by 35 percent. 
 
China’s fabric exports to Japan registered US$ 130 million, down 8.28 percent y-o-y in the first quarter. Of this, exports of cotton fabrics dropped by 22.59 percent y-o-y to US$ 38.08 million. The average price, too, fell by 15.31 percent y-o-y to US$ 1.06/metre.
 
In home textiles, China’s exports to Japan fell by 10.66 percent y-o-y to US$ 400 million during the three-month period. The average export price of home textiles, however, increased by up to 60 percent y-o-y to US$ 1.40 per metre.
 
The exports of knitted garments from China to Japan touched US$ 2.18 billion, down 1.32 percent year-on-year, during January-March 2013. Of this, export volume of woolen knitted garments was 290,000 sets, an increase of 40 percent y-o-y. The average export price of silk knitted garments was US$ 16.75 per piece/set, a rise of 31.13 percent y-o-y.
 
About US$ 800 million worth of woven garments were exported by China to Japan during the period under review, showing a decline of 5.7 percent y-o-y. Of this, exports of silk woven garments dropped by 27 percent in volume, while exports of cotton knitted apparels fell 3.5 percent in volume.
