Spanish textile sector production rate dips in March 2013

Textile sector production in Spain has shown a marginal decline of 0.3 percent year-on-year in March 2013, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

However, the decline in textile production in March was lower than the 2.1 percent year-on-year drop recorded in February this year.

The decrease in Industrial Production Index (IPI) in the country’s textile manufacturing sector is substantially lesser than that of the manufacturing sector, at large. The IPI of the entire Spanish industry recorded a loss of 9.8 percent compared to March 2012.

However, the IPI in most subsectors of the textile industry of Spain decreased in March 2013. The production rates went down by 21.8 percent for knitted apparels, 17 percent for manufactured garments, 12 percent for textile finishing; and 10.5 percent for yarn manufacturing.

IPI measures the monthly progress and productivity of industries, including extractive industries and the manufacturing sector. This indicator reflects only the quantity and quality of production, eliminating the influence of prices. This methodology is fully harmonized with the European Union countries.
