The area under cotton cultivation in China is likely to decline in 2013, according to a survey conducted by the Cotton Farmers branch of the China Cotton Association and Xinjiang Huatai Cotton Professional Cooperatives.

The survey, the fourth this year, on planting intentions and sowing progress, was conducted among 2,766 cotton growers from 12 mainland provinces and 310 counties of Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

The study concluded that cotton planting intentions of farmers fell 6.7 percent compared to last year. The 6.7 percent likely dip in cotton sowing area is 0.3 percent more than the decline in sowing area predicted by the earlier survey conducted in March this year.

As per the latest report, cotton is likely to be sown on an area of 68.22 million Mu (1 hectare = 15 Chinese Mu) in 2013.

China Cotton Association said cotton sowing was already complete on 76.9 percent of the expected cotton sowing acreage, as on April 30, 2013.
