The output of the Spanish textile industry registered a 2.7 percent year-on-year growth in May 2013, as per the latest Industrial Production Index (IPI) data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

This is the second consecutive monthly rise in textile production following an 18.1 percent rise in April achieved due to the least number of public holidays during the month.

The positive performance of the Spanish textile industry in May is in contrast to the overall 1.3 percent drop in Spanish industrial production during the month, modaes.es reported.

Garment production also increased for a second consecutive month. In May, garment sector output rose 1.2 percent, compared to a rise of 1 percent registered in April this year.

Among the textile subsectors, the biggest increase in production was recorded in the manufacturing of fur articles which increased by 22.7 percent year-on-year, followed by yarn production which grew by 3.4 percent, while readymade garment (except fur) increased by 0.6 percent.

However, production of knitted or crocheted garments decreased by 5.6 percent year-on-year, while textile finishing activity declined by 4.1 percent.
