The importance of the textile industry for the growth of fashion and apparel sector was highlighted by Francesc García-Planas, vice president of Texfor, the Confederation of the Spanish Textile Industry, at the first edition of ‘Texmeeting by Texfor’.

The meeting held under the theme ‘The Industry is Fashion’, as part of the 080 Barcelona Fashion in Spain, provided a discussion forum for finding solutions to different aspects of the textile sector and create the right framework to expand the professional network of participants.

The event, organized by Texfor, with the support of the Consortium of Commerce, Handicraft & Fashion (CCAM) of the Generalitat de Catalunya, discussed innovation and design in yarns, fabrics and accessories, and how these affect fashion.

Speaking at the meeting, García-Planas said fashion is nothing without textiles, and added that productive activity can guarantee progress in Catalonia and Spain.

Pere Torres, Secretary of Business and Competitiveness of Catalonia, said the government is committed to a new economic model that is based on three pillars—more industry, more innovation, and internationalization—which also serve as a model for the textile sector.

Mr. Torres said the new model would make the Catalan economy more strong and resilient. He said the future of textile companies that manufacture or sell yarn as well as woven and printed fabric, lies to a large extent in innovation and internationalization.

Several textile industry representatives who attended the meeting said the Catalan textile industry is currently going through a difficult phase, but expressed their willingness to bring the industry’s performance back on track.
