Italian textile exports to US growing at 15%: SMI

The exports of textiles and apparels from Italy to the US are growing at 15 percent annual rate, according to the Italian Fashion System or Sistema Moda Italia (SMI).
 
Speaking at a seminar in New York, SMI president Claudio Marenzi said Italy’s textile and garment exports to the US have shown a considerable growth, reports pambianconews.
 
The seminar organized by SMI and Intesa Sanpaolo was held in conjunction with five exhibitions—MRKT, Liberty, Capsule, Project and Premiere Vision, which saw participation of 90 Italian companies.
 
Mr. Marenzi said that in 2012, the total value of exports of textiles and clothing from Italy to the US exceeded €1.6 billion, registering an increase of 15 percent compared to the previous year.
 
Clothing accounted for 80 percent of the total value with €1.3 billion worth of exports, he added.
 
Mr. Marenzi said Italy is the eleventh largest supplier of textile and apparel to the US, and it has great potential to grow once the requirements of the American consumers are understood.
 
Italy’s menswear exports to the US showed a growth of 19 percent, while womenswear increased by 5.9 percent. The exports in shirts for women increased by 8 percent, and for men increased by 7.1 percent, during last year.
 
Italian textiles are known for their excellent quality the world over. The Italian textile and apparel industry is diversified in the sense that it has both companies operating in the upstream supply chain, such as spinning, weaving and finishers, and companies operating in downstream innerwear, apparel and household linen.
 
Even in processing, the Italian textile chain is complete in terms of processed fibers, as cotton processing enterprises coexist with companies active in the processing of artificial and synthetic fibers.
