China’s state cotton reserves will implement new standards from September 1, 2013, for purchasing cotton for state reserves.

The new standards lay more emphasis on the intrinsic quality of the cotton, and it would greatly impact the cotton picker machine industry.

Once the new standards are applied, cotton harvested using cotton picker machine are likely to be downgraded and revenue per ton of cotton may reduce by about 500 yuan, as per an analysis made by the Xinjiang Cotton Association.

To ensure the quality of cotton, cotton picker machine division will have to pay attention towards improving technological capabilities in order to improve cotton cleaning process and to reduce the instances of cotton with lower intrinsic quality.

According to statistics, in 2012-13 cotton season, about 59.8 percent of the total area under cotton was harvested using cotton picker machines.

The cost of harvesting cotton using cotton picker machine worked out to 737 yuan/mu, equivalent to 2.2 yuan/kg. In case of hand picking of cotton, the cost worked out to 900 yuan/mu, equivalent to 2.57 yuan/kg.

Using a wide range of cotton picker machines is the trend because it not only eases the difficult problem of employment, but also speeds up the harvesting process.

Last season, the Chinese Government purchased cotton for its state reserves at 20,400 yuan/ton.
