The next TTS Collector’s Corner – Tai Yuan and Their Textiles will be held on Saturday, 24th August by Acharn Boonchai.

The Tai Yuan are one of the earliest Tai people who settled in northern Thailand, the area known as Lanna in Thai history.

During the reign of King Rama I, they were dispersed throughout the northern and central provinces such as Naan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Lampang, Ratchaburi, Saraburi.

Today they are the majority population in northern Thailand and a minority in the central provinces. The Tai Yuan have developed distinctive weaving patterns, which serve to distinguish them from one another and Tai Yuan from other regions.

Clothing worn daily is not very elaborate but garments woven for ceremonial occasions are often elaborately decorated with tiin chok, supplementary weft patterning.

Acharn Boonchai has been collecting textiles for more than 25 years and has over 2000 pieces in his collection. He will share some of his Tai Yuan pieces with us and talk about the weaving techniques used and the differences and similarities seen among the patterns from the various areas of Thailand.
