The Ministry of Agriculture does not have the G. 20,000 million needed to subsidize cotton production in the country as promised by the previous government, new Minister for Agriculture, Government of Paraguay, Jorge Gattini has said.

During a meeting with cotton growers from Itapúa, Caaguazú and Concepción departments, the Minister said the promise by the previous government of giving subsidy to cotton producers cannot be fulfilled “simply because there is no money”.

The previous government had promised to compensate G. 500 per kilo to cotton producers.

The Minister said that at a meeting with representatives of the National Farmers’ Federation, they had said that they did not want the subsidy.

“Let us work seriously to develop new varieties, improve the soil and strengthen the condition of the people so that they can lead a better life,” the Minister said, according to a statement from the Ministry.

The new government under Horacio Cartes was formed on August 15, 2013.
